Fonte Avellana

The Monastery of Fonte Avellana is situated on the wooded slopes of Mount Catria (1,701 m) at 700 meters above sea level. Its origins date back to the end of the 10th century, around 980, when several hermits chose to build the first cells of a hermitage that would evolve over the centuries into the current monastery. The spirituality of these hermits was influenced by Saint Romuald of Ravenna, father of the Camaldolese Benedictine Congregation. He lived and worked between the 10th and 11th centuries in areas very close to Fonte Avellana, such as Sitria, Mount Petrano, and San Vincenzo al Furlo.
The monastic community practices hospitality toward all; it is primarily addressed to those who wish to share in prayer and the experience of seeking God. The days are marked by the community’s choral prayer. Hospitality for individuals and groups is available throughout the year, excluding the months of January, February, and November. Self-management is possible for groups of more than 10 people. Please always contact the Monastery’s guest house in advance to check availability; otherwise, you will need to stay overnight in Frontone or the surrounding areas.

The Hostel “Fronte del Parco” is located in the hamlet of Isola Fossara and is an excellent intermediate solution between the Monastery of Fonte Avellana (7 km away) and Pascelupo, which is reached with another 7 km of walking. The Hostel was converted from an old school that has been refurbished, offering 2 large dormitories and 7 bathrooms with showers, accommodating about 20 guests. The hostel also offers pilgrims the possibility of excellent lunches or dinners based on local products.
